On the one hand, they provided the horse packing service for our trip. On the other, they only went ~8 miles instead of the 13 we paid for. While I respect their need to ensure their horses and mules don’t twist an ankle on snow or ice, the reality is that they could have easily cleared 10’ of snowy trail with a shovel and gone another 2 miles. For our return trip, 6 days later, they picked us up in the same place they dropped us off. But actually, a solid 11.5 -12 miles of the trail was 100% snow free. With the amount they charge, I don’t think it’s too much to ask that they should have scouted this in advance. We also were told to give the tip in advance of the service. If you want horsepackers, by all means, use BMO. But early and late season hikers might not get what they paid for.

In 2022, I booked a guided elk hunt with Bald Mountain Outfitters and paid a $1,500 deposit for a 2026 hunt. After booking, the outfitter increased the price of the hunt multiple times over the following years. Because of the repeated price increases, I chose to cancel the hunt well in advance and requested the return of my deposit. Since canceling, I have made multiple attempts to communicate by email and phone but did not receive a response. I’m sharing this experience so others can be aware of the price changes and communication experience before booking.

We did a spot pack with Bald Mountain Outfitters, in which they packed our gear into the backcountry, dropped us off, and then picked us up again several days later. Positive: They fit us into their schedule on short notice. Communication with Terry was very good -- timely, informative, and detailed. Showing up the evening before to drop of the gear, Nicole went over the map with us, asked questions about our interests, and suggested a good backcountry site for us to base camp and go on day hikes. She and Terry were very knowledgeable about the region, and very helpful in planning. The gear weigh-in was quick. We showed up to the stable at the trailhead on time the next morning. The horses were already packed and saddled, ready to go. Negative: Right off the bat, one of the wranglers told us we basically needed to kick the horse at every step and constantly lash it with the end of the reins to keep it moving. This is not appropriate and was unnecessary. I never kicked or lashed my horse and it went along quite willingly. The wrangler, on the other hand, kicked his mule at every step and constantly lashed it, sometimes very sharply. A few times he looped the lead rope around the pack mule's nose and pulled it mercilessly, which was cruel and caused the mule to balk. The wrangler was an inexperienced (2 yrs) wrangler and a poor horseman, unkind to the animals in this way. We are experienced in backcountry trail riding and were fine on the horses, which was a good thing because the wrangler never looked back to check how we were doing, even in the very rough, steep sections. When we got to camp, he removed the panniers, and upended them, dumping the gear onto the ground, no regard for the gear. He said that was the best way to empty them. We were glad when he left. On the positive side for the wrangler, he was very willing to help identify alternative campsites along the way, though there were few options. Also, he showed up on time for the trip out and made sure the saddle, stirrups were properly adjusted. Overall: Very pleased with the knowledge, process, and price offered by Terry and Nicole. The Wind River Range is beautiful and we enjoyed our backcountry camp and hikes. Not happy about the wrangler. They need more experience, more understanding of animals and horsemanship, and better people skills.

Used Bald Mtn Outfitters for a gear drop and pickup for a six-night base camp near Island Lake. Terry, Nicole, and the crew of wranglers on both trips were hard-working, knowledgeable, and experienced. The stock seemed healthy and cared for. I’d book them again. Email with Terry was concise - just the facts. This ain’t no bespoke, curated-for-you experience. Show up where he says with your gear packed and ready. He and his crew will take it from there and pick it up when they say. For the work they put in - and the work it saved us - the rates were very reasonable.

Booked a moose hunt. To say the hunt was amazing would be an understatement. Brandon our guide was awesome! He had a great knowledge of the area, had a great wit, and was super fun to hang out with. The only complaint I had was that the hunt was over in two hours! Brandon found a great bull right off the bat that we knew was the one. After a quick stalk, we were giving high fives and taking pictures. There are a ton of moose in the area, and they know all the spots. Do yourself a favor and book with this outfit!

the weather was cold but the staff and guides went 120 percent out of their way to get you an elk and make your life there the best you could ask for.

Bald mountain outfitters are amazing! We have used them over and over to carry our gear in and out of the wind rivers as well as horse riding to campsites. They are always very careful with all of our things. Terry, Nycole and everyone else are so friendly and really care for their clients as well as the animals. They know the area like no one else and will give you a wonderful experience no matter what you are looking for
