We hunted with Stockton Outfitters for archery elk 2025 season, and the entire experience went far beyond my expectations. Our guide, Anthony, had us in elk every single day and taught us more about elk hunting in one week than I could have learned in five years on my own. Coming from Wisconsin, I quickly learned that elk hunting is a completely different world than whitetail hunting. The camp was fantastic. Cole, the camp chef, prepared meals that were outstanding. The food, comfort, and hospitality were well above what I imagined for a hunting camp. Jay and the entire crew were professional, hardworking, and committed to giving us the best possible chance at success. We did not put all the pieces together this time, but that is part of the experience. This is real, free-range country, not high fence or private land. The memories I have from this hunt will stay with me for a lifetime. One piece of advice for anyone booking this hunt: come physically and mentally prepared. The guides will hunt as hard as you are able, and the better shape you are in, the more of the views, spots, and opportunities you will get to enjoy. I have already booked another hunt for 2028. If you want to learn, hunt hard, and have an unforgettable adventure, I highly recommend Stockton Outfitters. This was a five-star experience from start to finish.

Great archery camp. 5 star breakfast-lunch-dinner. Incredible hospitality/customer service. Jay Winfield and his family treated me like family. All guides were very knowledgeable and experienced. My guide, Anthony Benes, was able to give me an opportunity that we will both remember for the rest of our lives. He deserves all credit.

I just concluded a hunt with Stockton Outfitters and it was the trip of a lifetime. Jay and his team went above and beyond in every aspect of the hunt. My good friend and I planned this archery hunt 3 years ago and Stockton delivered! We were paired with Anthony Hoyd, who was phenomenal. The elk weren’t being too vocal, but Anthony was committed to putting us on a bull, hunting 14+ hours every day, putting in the miles and the effort to get it done. His drive was incredible. On the morning of day 3, our efforts paid off. Anthony set us in our spots on a large meadow at 6:55 am. He set out a call and a bull quickly responded with a chuckle, thrashing in the trees about 200 yards away. Within a few minutes and some additional cow calls from Anthony, the bull chuckled again before emerging from the trees across the meadow at 110 yards. He continued to move across the field towards my setup, stopping at 70 yards. Anthony sent another cow call out, I drew my bow, and the bull moved in to 24 yards. I took my shot and the bill dropped at 68 yards at 7:10. What a rush! We couldn’t have had a better experience with this team! Hunt hard!

A bear hunt with no bears is the reason for this rating. Before I booked I was told that they average an 80% shot opportunity. Clearly that was not the case as no hunters this week even saw a bear. That's the bad part. Now for the good part. We stayed in the "Broken Arrow Lodge" which is one building in the Sugar Loaf Campground resort complex. This is a newer building with multiple private bedrooms spread over both the main floor and second floor, two bathrooms with 4 showers, a high quality kitchen and nice dining and living room areas. As far as the staff, there is a camp chef (not a camp cook) that serves you a high quality breakfast at 4:30 AM. Lunch is served at 3:30 PM after everyone returns from the morning hunt. Supper is served at 10:30 PM after the evening hunt is completed. As far as the guides, it's hard to tell how good they are, but one thing is certain, they give it a 100% effort. All of the ones I talked to were very personable. They are all very nice people, but with no bears in the area, it's hard to measure their skill level.
★★★★★
Top shelf Outfitter! From the lodge provided great comfort after a long day hunts and the food was excellent. The guides are amazing in their knowledge of the country and the game. They never stop in persuading your opportunity of harvesting game on a public land hunt. Their success rate compared to the hunt unit average is excellent. It is a demanding hunt with unbelievable scenery especially with the cold and snow we experienced this time.

Went on my hunt of a lifetime and could not be happier with my choice of outfitters! Stockton outfitters is an extremely professional, and successful outfitter with guides who are amazing at getting their guests a good shot on an elk. My guide was Jeff Tart and I'd swear the dude was Daniel Boone reincarnate! I hunted with several other hunters and everyone of us was successful even though some of us needed multiple opportunities due to their shooting skills. The hunts were magical! I got a great mule deer on the first full day with a 409 yard, cross canyon shot. I would have gotten an elk but I slipped in the snow and pulled a muscle in my right leg limiting my availability to climb high enough to hunt the where I needed to be. My guide put me on every opportunity and I had the time of my life. For a 60 year old man fulfilling a lifetime dream that he should have done when he was a lot younger, I could not have been happier. Mark Shutey runs a class organization with first class guides and an awesome chef at the hunting lodge. Cole (the chef) fixed some of the best meals I have had in years (don't tell my wife) but his lasagna beats my wife's hands down! I fully intend in the future to try my hand again at an elk especially since the other three hunters I hunted with all killed one. I will definitely be using Stockton Outfitters! The average elk tag fill is 1 in 10 but with 3 of 4 hunters all killing an elk, there is no way I trust anyone else but Mark and his crew to help me fulfill that life long dream. Thank you Mark and Jeff for the trip that I will never forget no matter how long I live!

My son and I had an adventure of a lifetime. We tagged out on impressive bulls and monster bucks, traveled majestic snow-covered game trails, hiked challenging trails above 7000 ft., and received outstanding instruction from true professional hunting guides. Much success, many laughs, great meals - can't wait to do it again.

Every experience we had in the woods will be forever etched in my memory, and be a part of stories told for years to come. The area is absolutely breathtaking and I can’t wait to be back. The guides, Chef Kole, and the accommodations are top notch. Experiencing the passion from everyone in camp was a thrill and I learned more in those 5 days in camp than I have in years. I can’t begin to find all the right words to justify just how amazing of a week we had. I can’t wait to do it again.

Stockton Outfitters is a very well run outfit. Food and lodging are top notch a true place to get away from it all and focus on the reason you're there THE HUNT! The guides do not disappoint. If you're physically and mentally strong enough they will put you on the game you are after. From sun up to sun down with many miles in between they met all my expectations and were successful in getting me to locate and harvest my first Bull Elk. I would highly recommend this outfit and I look forward to the opportunity to hunt with them again in the future .
★★★★★
Beyond my expectations! Mr. Mark Shutey runs an excellent guiding service for either the beginner hunter or seasoned veteran. Within my first day I had an Elk Bull in my rifle sight. The lodging conditions are super comfortable and cozy for restful sleep. The food prepared by Chef Kole is top notch, leaving you with a full belly and curious about what is going to be on the next menu. I can definitely say if you want to hunt in the southwest portion of Montana give Mr. Shutey a call at Stockton Outfitters. I look forward to going back! Gabe Herriott

My son and I had a phenomenal time. Mark runs a truly professional outfitting operation and goes above and beyond to make sure that everyone is comfortable and happy for the entire experience. Matt Rowe (our guide) knows the hunting area unbelievably well. He did a great job of keeping us on the animals and being able to anticipate their movements. Kole (the chef) made some of the absolute best food we've ever had anywhere. I would not hesitate to go with Stockton Outfitters again. I highly recommend them and can't wait to make a return trip and do it all again.
★★★★★
Had a awesome experience hunting with Stockton outfitters. Great camp, great food, awesome guides. We got on elk the very 1st day, and every day after leading up to the afternoon that I shot my bull. I recommend Stockton outfitters to anyone that wants to have a hunt of a lifetime.

I had the pleasure and privilege to hunt with Stockton Outfitters during the second week of archery elk season this year (2021) and could not have been more satisfied with the experience. The guides were skilled, very hardworking, professional, and totally focused on their client's experience. The food was downright excellent and the hunting was beyond what I had hoped for (even though I did not harvest an elk this time). I plan to hunt with these great folks as many times in the future as I can. Can't wait to go back.
★★★★★
An experience of a lifetime! Mark and his guides know the ins and outs of the land and the animals they track. Professional, genuine, salt-of-the-earth guys who make you feel right at home. My 71 year-old father, who is an avid hunter, said it was one of the best hunts of his life. Erik was knowledgeable, hard-working, and relentless when trying to help me fill my tag. We highly recommend Stockton Outfitters!
★★★★★
I hunted with Mark and his team eight different times with my son and clients over the last 15 years. Every time was a great adventure. The lodging and food were spectacular. Guides were top notch and knew their stuff. Saw a lot of beautiful country, a lot of animals and made a lot of GREAT memories! Looking forward to hunting again with Mark and his team.

Hey Mark I wanted to let you know that Stockton Outfitters is a very top notch guide service. From the lodge to the hunt. I want to thank Mark personally for an outstanding job he did for to try and recover my bear. As for the rest of the staff they were amazing. Cole the chief did a amazing job on feeding us. Thank you Cole. I met some wonderful people during my hunt. I highly recommend them highly. Just a note to all you southern boys. You better be in shape to walk them hills. Again thanks Mark your a class act.

Booked a bear hunt with Stockton back in '19 for a '20 hunt. COVID dashed my plans but Stockton was highly accommodating in making this hunt happen regardless. I drove from CA and would recommend driving so you don't need to worry about flying with all your gear or figuring out what to do with the meat. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Bring a .30 cal rifle of your choosing as they recommend against smaller options (Don't bring a 6.5 CM). Bring clothing for sunny and cold. I was warned about mosquitos but actually saw none. Don't forget a goofy orange vest as it is mandated per state regs. Accommodations: Outstanding. Lodge in the mountains with super comfy beds and a large communal area to network with your fellow hunters and guides. Meal plan is a little unique as pointed out by other reviewers but don't be concerned. They serve a 5 diamond breakfast at 6:30am and a 5 diamond dinner at 3:30 Pm. This maximizes time in the field hunting during peak hours. Peak hours for bear up there are late morning and basically all evening. You'll be back at the lodge around 10:30pm-11pm. A fancy dessert is served. I'm usually hungry if I don't eat that long but a simple request from Chef Cole and you'll have a hot meal or snack. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for what you need. That's what he's there for and you can leave him a tip to cover how annoying you gauge yourself to have been by the end of the trip. The hunt: Challenging but not spine breaking. This is not a Alaska sheep hunt. We hiked and hit some grades but nothing insane. I would definitely physically prepare regardless as each guide and each area you hunt is different. Some hunters were limited by physical ability. The guides were professionals at catering to specific hunters goals, abilities, and expectations and everyone at camp left with lifetime memories and huge grins. Focus on cardio and endurance. Lifting 300 pounds on the bench won't help you hiking in the backcountry. Bear hunting involves a lot of glassing. That's just the nature of bear hunting. Layered clothing is good because you'll get warm hiking and cold when sitting still. Packed a lot of random stuff into this review but hopefully you found it helpful. Random tips: The lodge is in an area with no cell service. If bitcoin tanks while you're there, you won't know. I brought a Garmin InReach Mini with an unlimited plan and was able to text back and forth with my family every day. I highly recommend the device. I placed mine on a ledge outside and connected to it using my cell phone bluetooth. I was able to text from the comfort of my bed using this method. It's also not a bad idea to have it in the field. If your guide tumbles down a cliff, you can call for help. Most the guides had their own in case of emergencies. Ask Cole for a sandwich if you get hungry between 6:30-3:30pm and bring snacks with you (Provided at the lodge or bring your own favorite field snacks). I don't get why that other reviewer had issue with food. You're a grown adult, speak up and or bring some snacks. Not rocket science. Was it worth it? On day 4 of my epic hunt I downed a beautiful chocolate phase Montanan black bear. But the knowledge I soaked up from my guide and the journey out there that led to the shot was priceless. Of all 3 groups out hunting at camp (2 solo and 1 father/son pair) all 3 had shot opportunities. One guy had a clear 60 yard shot on a beautiful bear (There was video to prove it) but instead connected with nature and decided to spare the bears life. He literally watched it come to the call from owner Mark and enjoyed its presence. Mad respect for that man because I wouldn't have been able to hold my fire. These beautiful beasts will connect with you in ways you wouldn't expect. The other group harvested a gorgeous jet black bear. Lastly, I want to thank my guide Connor. Highly knowledgeable, hard working, and a blast to be around. I hope to hunt with him again. Mark, Thanks for making this happen despite the covid issues from last year. Eric

Hunted 3 separate times with Mark and can say no outfitter I have been with has worked as hard as he does to get you on your game. Look forward to going out with them again in the future.

The Stockton experience is absolutely top notch. Mark Shutey and his team are honest, hard working and push as hard as they can to give their clients the experience they pay for. I went on an archery hunt in early September and a gun hunt with my dad in October. Both hunts had encounters, and I took home an archery Bull. Dad took home a rifle cow. Filled our freezer both years which is no small task! There's definitely critters running around these parts, Stockton can't control the weather but they can certainly control their efforts and it's 100% from day one. Both tent camp (archery) and lodge (gun) had excellent accommodations. At both locations you slept comfortably and ate meals fit for a King...or Queen! Highly recommend if you're looking for a great overall experience with an honest team of guides.
★★★★★
Amazing Place to experience. Stockton runs a great adventure. I had a wonderful time on both my trips. I saw a great amount of country, hunted everywhere and my guides worked hard to ensure success. While weather always plays a part of any outdoor experience, my guides never gave up, provided great knowledge of the area, and very telling knowledge of the animals. The service was always well prepared for whatever was thrown at them, and worked hard to ensure that I could keep up and that I was well provided for. The accommodations were amazing as well. The Chef provided specialty meals and lunches, even tailoring the meals to everyone's needs. His food was about as good as you will get...anywhere. The lodge was very comfortable, warm, and just plain friendly. It was like being home (except for the wolves howling at night). All my hunts with Stockton filled my tags, filled my freezer, and provided memories that will last a lifetime... Stockton has a motto: "Hunt Hard".... I love this, because its the way I live, and to Hunt with Folks that believe this is an absolute joy.
★★★★★
I had the wonderful opportunity to use Mark Shutey’s company for two amazing archery hunts in Montana. The tents were very clean and well appointed with everything you could need to be comfortable. His attention to detail is second to none and of course having Cole as his chef in camp is just pure icing on the cake. I have recommended his company several times and would not hesitate to go back again...in fact I will do so this fall!. I don’t give five stars easily but he and his amazing crew have earned them all.
★★★★★
Bar none Stockton Outfitters is all about integrity, honesty and hunting hard. I've been in the hunting industry for 21 years and I've sent over 100 hunters to Mark "owner" of Stockton Outfitters. Mark and his crew go above and beyond to make your hunt a memorable one. If your looking for a hint of a lifetime, go visit Stockton Outfitters and you'll be leaving a 5 star review as well.

Mark Shutey, Stockton Outfitters, did a great job advising in preparation for the hunt, then during the hunt Mark had us Elk and Mule Deer everyday, we had lots of opportunities to take lots of game. It was a great hunt in all aspects.
★★☆☆☆
First off, I’ve hesitated to write this because I certainly do not like to discourage anyone from using the services of one’s business. However, I have felt compelled to do so to only inform/help future hunters of what my husband and I have experienced using Stockton outfitters, as we all know, financially these trips can be quite the undertaking. Pros: -Chef Kole was outstanding!! By far, the best meals we’ve ever had. And you will not go hungry!! We were extremely impressed. -Lodging was very nice! Super comfortable, clean and well taken care of. It was always nice to come back to a nice warm fire after a long day in the cold. -The Butte area was amazing! Beautiful views and nice towns. -Saw Elk everyday -Hunters in camp were awesome! Stories told and the camaraderie between us made the trip so much more enjoyable Cons: -Camaraderie between guides and hunters were extremely lacking. (“Due to covid”) -Our guide had a very unreliable vehicle that cost us valuable hunting time! There were so many set backs. We wish we would have been able to use our own truck as the week went on. -Tire chains were excessively used with less than mild conditions, which caused even more time lost hunting. The other guides may have only used chains once throughout the whole week. -We also thought it was odd that breakfast was at 6 a.m., regardless of where the hunting location was. -Only 2 out of 5 mornings we were in our hunting location by day light. -We were expecting to hike a minimum of 6 miles per day.. everything was within a short distance from the vehicle. It was extremely disappointing. -Jeep doors were slammed repeatedly after exiting the vehicle to get to a hunting location, only a few hundred yards away!! Overall, we enjoyed Montana (what’s not to love) however, the outcome to this hunt was disappointing. We had spent a lot of time and money preparing for this hunt, expecting to be out early and hunting hard ALL day. Ultimately, we would not recommend Stockton outfitters to a friend. EDIT: In response to Mr. Shutey; We kept our review very subtle and professional. If this were a good review, our delayed response would be as no surprise. We understand you specifically asked of everyone to speak up directly in regards to any aspect of our hunt, however, it certainly would have made things quite awkward, plus as our week continued, we tried to give you all the benefit of the doubt. We wanted to make the best of things, knowing how much we spent on this trip overall. As for our shot opportunity, (which we weren’t even going to cover that in this review) the morning after to possibly recover our game was completely unprofessional and was a complete disaster. We wanted to leave early, knowing how far we had to travel, and unfortunately, you don’t start until after 6 a.m. every morning and our guide misplaced a piece of gear, which delayed us getting to the last known area of where the bull was last seen. We didn’t get there until after 9 A.M.! Which is totally uncalled for! We had taken the shot at last light the previous evening, gave the bull time, however, could not pin point where the bull was, due to the dark. Our plan was to come at first light, search and was hoping to recover that bull. But, due to us arriving so late, other unknown hunters were in the same location before us. The ironic part is, those same hunters were found later on with a 5x5 and also a 4x4 in the back of there trucks, which matched the same sizes as what we saw the night before. So we certainly felt we were cheated the opportunity, that we would have never let happen if it were in our hands. We would have made every effort to get there at first light, to allow us the best chance, which then we would have tried our best and felt more fulfilled. Mr. Shutey was also very condescending towards us hunters, and made comments about our gear as well. I personally did not appreciate it, which again resulted in less communication between us and him. Again, this is only to help future hunters and to share our experience only.
★★★★★
Stockton Outfitters provided an outstanding experience for my dad, brother and myself on our trip. Special thank you to the guides Mark, Matt and Jeff. All three have an amazing understanding of the area and what techniques will lead to success. The food in camp prepared by Chef Kole is both abundant and outstanding. I would absolutely recommend Stockton Outfitters to anyone looking for a Montana big game hunt. This outfit is extremely professional and well prepared for all of your needs.

I hunted the first week of October of 2020. The first morning we saw about 30-50 elk. I harvested a cow that morning. The next day we put a hell of a stalk on a bull but we couldn't get a good shot. That afternoon I we saw about 15 deer and I harvested a MD buck. We saw elk and deer just about every day of the 5 days. On the last morning we saw about 50 elk and I got a great bull. We probably hiked 25 miles over the 5 days of hunting. This is public land so don't think you are just going to walk up the hill and shoot something. We put in the hard work and got it done. All of my shots were 350+ yards. With that being said make sure you practiced before you hunt. I was lucky enough to fill all my tags. The temperature was from about -15 to 60 over the 5 days so pack layers of clothing. The food and lodging was good as well. you will get 3 different meals each day. Over all it was a great time and I would do it again.
★★★★★
Mark a big thanks goes out to you and your staff for a great time. The food and accommodations were excellent. The hunting was great. You and your staff worked hard to get us in front of the animals. I would say I would give you and your staff a 10 on a scale of 1-10.
★★★★★
I have to say my trip to Montana with Stockton Outfitters has more than exceeded my expectations. Mark and his staff were so professional and tried so hard to make sure that we had a great experience. The accommodations were awesome, the food prepared by not a cook but Chef Kole was great. The staff wanted to make sure they did everything they could to get you in front of Elk. If you did not have a great time it was because you did not want to. The territory that you will Hunt is amazing. I would highly recommend Mark Shutey and Stockton Outfitters for an experience of a lifetime. Mark, thanks again and looking forward to my next hunt.
