The beautiful sunrise and sounds of bugling bulls set the stage perfectly. Then the big one stepped out. One shot and I had my dream bull elk. Great big thank you to Matt, Henry, Travis, and all who enjoyed the experience with me.

★★☆☆☆Booked a turkey hunt with Sangre De Cristo Outfitters. Arrived 4/7/23 to lodge in Westcliffe. Lodge was filthy and unsafe. Dead mouse in the middle of the floor in my room, dead flies in the windowsills. Sleeping accommodations were spartan at best - my bed was memory foam - no mattress. Stairway to the upstairs living area was UNLIT and handrail stopped partway down. Bottom two stairs were left without hand rail protection. Heavy with anticipation, opening day arrived. my hunting partner scored early, reaping a bird at 7am. i spent the remaining time that morning waiting to ambush birds as one of the guides sat in his truck watching them from afar. Finally chased after a bunch of birds, intercepted them late, and took a long shot at a fleeing longbeard at the urging of my "guide". Found out later that this "guide" was actually a paying customer of SdC and not affiliated with the outfitter as i was led to believe. Saturday evening i was asked to sit in the truck while i watched other hunters on post. No evening hunt for me! Sunday morning, i missed the last two stairs at the bottom -black dark and no hand rail. landed flat on my face and right side. no broken bones but sore as heck. I was taken to a roost site. Lots of birds. They flew down and went the other way. Oh well, that's hunting. No problem, but then I was forced to sit at that site for the remainder of the day.......14 HOURS - no other interaction. Was not allowed to run/gun or seek out any other birds. Overall experience was POOR. I would not recommend this outfitter to anyone. Way too many missed opportunities for me. Was considering an elk hunt - which i will now pursue elsewhere.
