Nate Peltier and I hunted hard for five (5) days mid-May 2026, and saw three shootable black bears in the 5-foot square size. But, I shot one of those last year and really wanted a chocolate. Color shopping really adds an extra layer of difficulty to extremely random activity (bears can be very habitual at times, but also very random and non-habitual). This spring simply had a late winter with sleeting, windy, rainy, overcast, cold conditions not very conducive to good bear hunting. I'll be back. Nate Peltier is an exceptional hunting guide, and the Linehan's always take good care of us when we're in town. I just love the Libby river house. Clean, isolated, quiet, comfy, warm, with awesome views.

Went on a trip this past summer with Linehan Outfitting Company with my dad and it couldn’t have been better. The guides somehow managed to be ridiculously cool and absurdly smart—like walking fishing encyclopedias who also know how to have a good time. They put us on fish, kept things relaxed, and made sure we were laughing almost as much as we were casting. If you want a top-tier fishing experience with guides who clearly know their stuff and put a smile on your face, this is the crew to book and hook. This is my second stay with Linehan Outfitters. I’m delighted to say that they have maintained world-class standards of hospitality and service. The Yaak River cabins have everything needed including excellent WiFi and television reception. Coming back at the end of the day to find dishes washed and bed made was a welcome surprise. Lunches provided by Joanne were always delicious, with homemade bread. She also made wonderful soups which appeared on the kitchen counter every day. My guide Seth was knowledgeable and hardworking. He is also patient and understanding, pacing himself to accommodate my mobility issues. He made sure the blinds were well sited on active trails but the weather was unusually warm. We saw only one mature buck. It was a magnificent specimen and it was entirely my fault that I didn’t harvest it. Two other hunters went home with a nice 10-pointer and a massive 160-class monster. The Yaak is gorgeous, densely forested country. It lies right against the Canadian border. Hunting and fishing opportunities abound and Tim and Joanne Linehan are the perfect folks to share them with.

My wife and I had a 3-day fishing excursion with Linehan Outfitting in July 2025. It was a wonderful time and a truly fun experience. The cabin accommodation was quite comfortable, delightful and secluded. The bed was comfortable; the area was quiet and peaceful. Deer visited the grounds each of the days and we saw several on our trips to and from the cabin. All that we needed was provided, including items at the cabin and all relevant fishing gear. Communication was excellent. Each evening, we had a conversation with either Tim or Joanne, inquiring about that day and informing us about what to expect the upcoming day. Both were friendly, informative, pleasant and enjoyable to talk to. Tim would ask a lot of questions about our needs/wants, encouraging us to communicate with our guides, wanting us to have fun and, in general, making sure that all the bases were covered. The bases were covered. Our guide for the first two days, Sam Stevenson, is a great guy and guide who is quite patient and easy-going. He worked well with my wife who is a beginner and helped her improve her casting skills, retrieving skills and helped her to be comfortable and have fun. She had a blast. Our second day brought rain off and on, all day, which did not deter Sam nor us, as we fished all day long. The fishing was fun and exciting. The fish are beautiful, feisty and strong. The scenery is outstanding, and the river is a pleasure to experience. The fish hook-up was plentiful, and the misses were just as fun. Our guide on the final day, Johnny Pares, is a high energy guide who is also patient, easy-going and who worked well with my wife, and me, on presentation and retrieval. This day was another stellar day on the Kootenai River. Both guides provided fun, knowledge, instruction, excellent sandwich lunches, excellent oar handling and in general made things easy and fun for us. The gear provided was top quality as we were provided with the newest Orvis Helio 4 rods which were outstanding. I hope we have the chance to visit this area and this outfitter again. The area is truly beautiful. The people were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and truly wanted us to have a good time. That’s what we did. Tim and Joanne have built a quality, well-run outfit and those that work with them are top-notch.

Our guide got us on to a lot of fish with excellent numbers and size. The Orvis gear that was provided was high quality. Where I come from I would consider our guide a "Top Hand" with complete knowledge of what flies to use and were to put them on the water. Safety of clients was well demonstrated and as well as, the catch, release, and handling of fish. The lunch was outstanding and met our dietary needs. This was my first outing with Linehan. I booked a mountain lion hunt for early December. Tim kept an eye on weather conditions and proactively encouraged me to reschedule to January when they were not favorable. I did and had success on day one with some new snow. My guide Nate was very patient with me and my physical limitations. It was an incredible experience. I stayed at the Lodge in Libby as the sole guest. Tim and Joanne checked on me regularly to make sure I had what I needed. The Lodge is better equipped than most households, but if you did need anything or just wanted to get out to a restaurant It’s just a couple mile drive into Libby. This was a bucket list item I was not sure was possible at my age, but they made it happen. I a very appreciative. Thank you!

Over twenty years ago, Diane and I were at an Atlanta Fly Fishing Show when we decided to attend a Destination Presentation. Tim Linehan gave a very enthusiastic and enjoyable presentation on fishing the Kootenai River in northwest Montana. It immediately went on our bucket list, but careers and raising children intervened until this year. The week there in July was everything we hoped for and much more. Tim and Joanne were wonderful host and hostess and Joanne is the chef supreme. Along with fresh fruit and vegetables harvested at the lodge, her meals are to die for. Don’t show up on the first day of your new diet. An interesting group of flyfishing guests made for fun interactions each day after fishing before and during dinners and each morning around breakfast. And of course, the fishing was fantastic. Diane and I are predominantly nymph fishers, so it was quite a thrill to catch’em on just dry flies for five days. The guides were expert, personable and knew just how much help to give, and we got a different guide each day, including Tim Linehan one day. Tim Flagler, fly tier extraordinaire, did an amazing job of organizing this week and it was a real treat spending the week of Tim sharing his vast knowledge and many stories with the group. We are hoping that Tim and Joanne will allow us back again next year.

Tim and Joanne have created a terrific "home base" for outdoor recreation and for simple enjoyment of their patch of paradise. I haven't hunted with them but I've fished with Linehan Outfitting four times, three of them on the Kootenai River. My most recent experience was in September of 2024. For three years I had held out a fishing trip on the Kootenai as incentive for my brother to get through 2 knee and 2 hip replacement surgeries and recoveries. He and I were both so grateful for the experience that Tim, Joanne, their staff, and our guides curated for our enjoyment. It couldn't have been a better experience; except that "little brother" caught the biggest fish of the trip on the first day and gloated all they way through the rest of the trip. I wouldn't have had it any other way ... unless I had caught the best fish. I would have like that better. Seriously, I've fished the Kootenai many times now and I can't imagine ever getting tired of it or of the great people from Linehan Outfitters I've spent time with on the river. Great river, great fish, great people, great hospitality. A++ y’all!
