I had high expectations booking a trip with this Aspen guide service, but unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had on the water. 1. Poor Fishing Experience Despite Ideal Conditions As experienced anglers, we came prepared and excited to fish what was supposed to be world-class fly fishing. Conditions could not have been better—local reports even noted that fishing was optimal. Yet, the guide brought us to a location that was poorly chosen, without evidence of scouting or planning. While we struggled to catch anything, other anglers in different spots were landing fish consistently. This made it clear the issue wasn’t the river or the conditions—it was the lack of knowledge and preparation from the guide service. 2. Lack of Effort and Professionalism in Guiding A professional guide’s job is not just to stand nearby, but to adapt, relocate, and strategize when fish aren’t biting. That never happened here. Instead, we were left in a spot with little chance of success, and no effort was made to move or adjust the plan. For a company advertising premium, world-class experiences, this was deeply disappointing. 3. Inappropriate Handling of Gratuities To make matters worse, after the trip ended, the owner personally told us how much we should tip the guide—even though we had already tipped. This was unprofessional and left us feeling pressured. Tipping should always be voluntary and based on the quality of the service provided, not dictated by the owner after the fact. 4. Overall Value Given the cost of this service, the return was abysmal. Poor location choices, no scouting, a lackluster guiding experience, and pressure over tipping all combined to turn what should have been a memorable Aspen fishing trip into a frustrating waste of time and money. Conclusion This was a terrible experience from start to finish. Despite ideal fishing conditions and our own experience as anglers, the guide service failed at every level—planning, execution, and professionalism. I cannot recommend this company to anyone looking for a true fly-fishing experience in Aspen.

We booked a fly fishing trip with Tom and a clay shooting outing with Karl. We had so much fun. My wife was new to both fly fishing and shooting guns — both guides took the time to walk her through every step of the process and ensure she was comfortable. And of course by the end she outshot and outfished me. We contacted Aspen Outfitting right as they were returning from a company retreat. Jarrod and I played a game of phone tag over a few hours as we were both busy, but we so appreciated that he understood what we were looking for, found time with his stellar team, and made the “onboarding” super easy for waivers, payments, etc. Huge thank you to Jarrod, Tom, and Karl and highly recommend this company!

I had the opportunity to fish for 2 days with Cian and had a blast! I consider myself seasoned fly angler in Pennsylvania and still learned some new methods and had to shake some old habits. Cian was a great instructor, knew exactly where the fish would be sitting, telling me what I needed to change, and most importantly explained the why behind everything. That is how you learn! Hats off to you, Cian! My parents also had a blast, my mom only ever touching a fly rod a handful of times. While walking in the St. Regis hotel, I noticed this fly shop was advertising winter fly fishing. I came to Aspen to ski, but was pleasantly surprised to learn that there is winter fly fishing available in March. I booked a half day in early March 2023 and had a wonderful and productive outing with my guide Mal. They provided all gear and clothing to make the day memorable and productive. Can’t say enough good things about the company and my experience today! Went solo without the hubby as I love fishing and he wanted to ski and I did not. Matt was my guide and he was so attentive and instructional and helped me be successful landing fish my first time ever doing it! As a hotel manager who arranges ample group trips and activities, I can say all of their guides are professional and knowledgeable about their craft. AOC does a great job handling high profile clientele along with families. I highly recommend requesting their head guide, Tom Menas!! Jarrod the Owner and Eric the GM are super organized and a dream for planners to work with. Cannot recommend enough!
